MedLab Pathology (MLP) is a part of an international medical diagnostics company, called Sonic Healthcare. Sonic Healthcare is structured as a decentralised federation of medically-led diagnostic practices. Sonic employs over 36,000 people in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland and the USA.

The Dublin laboratory provides a clinical diagnostic service to fertility clinics, private healthcare screening clients, General Practitioners and external hospitals throughout the country.

The services provided within the laboratory are blood sciences, cytology and molecular testing. As a member of the Sonic Healthcare group, this provides a further extensive list of testing for specialties outside the laboratory. In addition, the laboratory engages in government partnerships and national screening services based in Ireland. The laboratory is actively involved in clinical audits, improvement and expansion.



The role provides daily leadership in the coordination of the referral work generated by MLP. The development and maintenance of systems will be necessary to ensure both a rapid and responsive service is delivered by the Referrals Coordinator to both internal and external customers.



  • To liaise with all internal suppliers & customers to the Referrals department; including but not limited to, the Pre-Analytics department, the Cytology Manager, the Medical Scientists, the Logistics team, the Quality Assurance department, etc.
  • To assist in the input and reporting of all returned results and to ensure that results are conveyed to the requesting doctors in a timely manner.
  • To be a proficient user of the MLP LIMS and to communicate any changes in sample type, methodology and references ranges for referral tests to relevant staff.
  • To manage the processes designed to ensure that referred test results are returned to MLP within agreed timeframes.
  • To be familiar with the process required for receiving, packaging, documentation, and dispatch of samples, referred to external laboratories.
  • Confirm delivery of referral samples to all external sites via shipment notifications.
  • To liaise directly with internal & external customers when a question arises about a referral test and to give advice on appropriate sample handling and procedures.
  • To communicate queries, regarding results or new tests to clients in a timely and professional manner.
  • Monitor overdue and error list reports.
  • Statistical report generation for TAT monitoring.
  • Completing entry of billing codes for billing of referral tests.
  • Sourcing and set-up of referral laboratories.
  • Maintenance of SLA's for all referral laboratories.
  • Ensuring that all procedures are documented and updated as required.
  • To become familiar with the day to day organisation of the department.
  • To attend team meetings as required.
  • To undertake such work as you are assigned in a careful and efficient way in compliance with ISO15189, NCSS guidelines and the MLP Quality Management system.
  • Comply with Health and Safety legislation and be aware of the responsibilities of the employee in this context.
  • Provide input to maintaining policies and procedures, review and update as required.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Manager.

The ideal candidate will be required to coordinate the referral laboratory sample management at MedLab Pathology. Working knowledge of the MLP LIMS and general clinical laboratory operations, flexibility and excellent communication skills are preferred along with experience in a similar role.

A minimum of 2 years' experience is preferred in addition to a scientific degree/diploma*.

*An alternative combination of experience, education, and training determined by management to be equivalent to the foregoing.
