MedLab Pathology (MLP) was established in May 2010 as Sonic Healthcare's Irish laboratory facility. MedLab Pathology is being developed to bring together our proven international capabilities and local expertise to provide internationally recognised best practice developments in laboratory medicine to the Irish healthcare sector.

The Role

 

 

We are seeking an experienced Chief Medical Scientist with relevant expertise to fill a role of AutoLab Manager (Blood Sciences dept.) to assist with the provision of a quality laboratory service in line with ISO 15189:2012 standards of MedLab Pathology. As a key member of the Pathology Laboratory team, the AutoLab Manager will demonstrate professional competence, team-working skills, lead the organisation and management of a comprehensive blood sciences service, to reflect the laboratory's commitment to the patient with focused care and high quality. To provide a Haematology, Clinical Chemistry and Serology service to all users as well as general support and training to Medical Scientists and trainee Medical Scientists.

The position requires a participatory approach, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives. The role will be multi-disciplinary in relation to Biochemistry, Haematology and Serology.  Full procedural and cross training will be provided.

 

 

JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Ensure appropriate compliance with International and National guidelines and standards for the provision of relevant Laboratory services and actively participate in internal and external quality assurance. Commit to the requirements of ISO 15189 Medical Laboratories-Particular Requirements for Quality and Competence and other national guidelines and standards such as HIQA and NSS.
  • Promote a professional, punctual and dedicated team with good open communications.
  • Motivate team members on a day-to-day basis by agreeing goals and objectives in keeping with the company's performance anticipated performance system.
  • Identify weakness in the Department and promote through consultation ways of improvement.
  • Assist with recruitment of suitable scientific and support staff.
  • In consultation with other senior staff prepare work schedules, assign duties and organise rosters within the AutoLab and ensure cover for all services and working hours.
  • Provide statistical and management information to management team.
  • Ensure most effective use of available resources and the smooth running of the AutoLab.
  • Assist in reagent and general stock control related to the AutoLab area.
  • Be aware of current advances and appraise new techniques.
  • Evaluate results and communicate with the Laboratory Management, Consultant Pathologist and/or the requesting clinician any relevant information regarding patient safety.
  • Be responsible for ensuring the maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus in a safe and proper condition.
  • Ensure the document control system is maintained document revision are scheduled and completed in line with policy.
  • To facilitate scheduling of internal audits in conjunction with the Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Responsible for ensuring non-conformances are documented correctly, assigned for corrective action and monitored.
  • Participate in performing automated and manual analysis of samples when required including on-call rota.
  • Guidance and supervision of all medical scientists.
  • Provision and management of continuous training for all medical scientists and auxiliary laboratory personnel.
  • Participation in relevant internal and external training and proficiency programs.
  • Perform annual review of all direct reports.
  • Provide input to maintaining policies and procedures, review and update as required.
  • Comply with Health and Safety legislation and be aware of the responsibilities of the employee in this context.
  • Any other duties as agreed with the Operations Manager or CEO.

 

 

 

Authority

                                Direction of Medical Scientists and medical laboratory aides.

                                Authorization of patient results.

Communication to nurses, GPs and consultants regarding patient sample and demographic information.

 

 

The Person

 

 

Essential requirements for the ideal candidate:

 

(i)                Educational Requirements

 

MSc in Medical Laboratory-related discipline

Current registration with Academy of Medical Laboratory Science.

 

                                                               

(ii)              Experience Required

 

At least 4 years in a similar role

 

 

(iii)            Key Competencies

(iv)             Particulars of office

 

      Full-time permanent contract.

    

  • Normal working hours will be 37.5 hours per week.
  • You will be required to work the agreed roster/on call arrangements
  • The additional on call service is a 24 hr service 7 days a week which carries an additional
